The speeches are one of my favorite parts of any wedding day. As a photographer, I have contact with my couples 1-2 times before their wedding day. But the people giving speeches at a wedding? They have known the bride and groom for years or sometimes even a LIFETIME! I look forward to this part of the day because I get a really good glimpse into who the bride and groom truly are.
The sun was setting in downtown Milwaukee and the candles on the tables flickered all around the Sixth Floor. Kayla and Zubair’s best friends stood up to toast to their friends and marriage. The maid of honor, Sam, spoke of Kayla’s self- assurance and how she uses that in turn to help guide others. The best man recalled a time when Zubair threw logic out the window in order to preserve his loyalty and presence for his friends. And as the speeches wrapped up, I realized something: I had already known and been interacting with the “true” Kayla and Zubair for over a year. While most speeches teach me new character traits of my couples, these speeches more so confirmed the reality I had already experienced firsthand. Kayla is confident and caring, and Zubair is loyal and trustworthy. Together they are just the right match for each other.
I loved how Kayla and Zubair’s wedding incorporated aspects of Zubair’s Indian culture with henna and a palate of peacock hues- green, ink, purple, gold. During their ceremony, the included a sand ceremony where they each brought sand from where they grew up (the shore of Lake Superior and from India) and mixed them together symbolizing their unity. They even started the dancing portion of the night by performing a perfectly choreographed waltz!
Kayla and Zubair- I wish you (and Zara!) the best as you embark on the lifelong journey of your marriage. It was so special to be a part of the group of your family and friends who got to celebrate you. Cheers!
I LOVE this creative little favor for the guests’ dogs from Zara, Kayla and Zubair’s dog!
